Soundgarden...

In 4 weeks Soundgarden will release their first album since 1997. A band that to me was much more than average grunge of its peers at the time. Kim Thayil didn't just bang on pawn shop guitars like so many from the era and he was even named one of the Top 100 guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone a few years back.

This picture was in the February 1995 issue of Guitar World magazine. I remember seeing this image and thinking it was so cool. I was so entrenched in playing bass, skating and doing drugs at the time that music like The Melvins and Soundgarden made perfect sense. The funny part now is that I'm not in a band anymore, I don't skate anymore and I put the drugs aside 10 years ago, but I still listen to The Melvins and Soundgarden.

Corrosion of Conformity...

This song got my day started this morning. Some people will argue that the original CoC was better, but I dig the shit out of the Southern rock version led up by Peppar Keenan.

Matching colors...

Often times less is more when it comes to paint. The matching frame rear springer legs and body work on this Shovel are a good example of how you don't have to have 100 colors, fish scales, lace and rainbows. For another example look at Chopper Dave's Super Freak.

Warren Johnson...

So I got my stuff back from Kendall Johnson today. Stoked as hell. Now my heads are getting done. I am updating my cam chest to a late model style. I am going with a 585 252 bob woods cam. Compression releases in the heads due to the close to 11 to 1 by the time I am done CCing the heads. I think Warren Johnson's machinist might be doing my heads. Warren is a Pro Stock legend. I will be finding that out in a couple days. I also got these awesome slim risers from Low Brow today the things look tough as nails. Can't wait till this is all over with. Ready to ride my motorcycle being down in the summer sucks balls.

Maiden voyage...

I finally got the brakes sorted out, got everything just right and took her for a spin. Having never ridden jockey shift before, it was a learning experience and it's still a little alien (sharp left turns from a stop SUCKS), but I'll get it down. The Baker shifts like a damn champ and everything seems to be okay for now. I'm gonna shake it down a lot before the Ride For Lightning so that I know it's good to go on that long ass trip. I'm still waiting on my seat from Christian and he's supposed to be working on it right now (even though I've heard that before).

Hell On Wheels...

They're doing the Hell On Wheels Beer Fest in Buford this year, so it'll be on our own stomping grounds. There'll be plenty of beer to drink and we have plenty of places to hang out...thank God because I can only handle so many orcabilly chicks before my anger disorder flairs up and I start cussing at them..."Fat girls in the 50's didn't have neck tattoos and you have the same dumbass hair cut as every other tub of shit here in a fugly dress. That's what my 2 year old son says when he wants something. Well, it's gonna be time soon to start putting the second Shovel together, but before then I need to figure out which route I'm gonna go. Sure I could go with a little fancier, but still reliable 93" S&S build (3 5/8 bore, 4 1/2 stroke) or I could go with something a little more and do a 108" with Axtell 3 13/16 jugs/pistons and a 4 3/4 stroke crank. Maybe I'll stay kind mild with this one and toss on some of those Axtells when it's time to rebuild the 100" next time...kick only, jockey shifted 108" cammed Shovel? Jesus.

Warp Riders...

I've seen these guys live several times and they never fail to disappoint. Keeping true to a classic, fuzz-driven, tube-fired sound, The Sword has a sound reminiscent of the roots of metal. Warp Riders came out today and just like their previous efforts, I can play it from start to finish and not blink an eye.

Athens Motorcycle Police...

Athens is a town north of Atlanta that is well known as being the home of UGA. It's also a breeding ground for hippies, artists, musicians and various oddballs. There isn't much surrounding that town and I can just imagine how podunk it was 75-100 years ago, even though UGA has been there since 1785.

Here are some pics of the Athens Motorcycle Police early in the 20th century. Most are on 1925 JD Harleys, while the last one is a group shot of 1947 Knuckleheads.

Football starts next weekend, so I'll be tearing it up in Athens on Saturdays...hopefully I can avoid these fellers while I'm there.

I think too much...

Since my Dodge is almost paid off and will last 1 million miles without a problem (Cummins TD), I thought about keeping it for a while and converting it into a crawler/flatbed/recovery truck. Toss some fuel tanks, an air supply, tool boxes, 37s (already has 35s), ARB air lockers, sliders, a new bumper and a winch on it and take it to the trails. It's always nice to have a to rig too, even though I don't have a trailer right now.

I know it's a little big, but I've built crawlers before and they're a blast to have.

I'm back from Biloxi with a little lighter pockets. I was hoping to hit some big mega-jackpot or something, but to no avail.

So I got some brass headlights that look like they are for a 32. I started polishing on them and they are cleaning up like a dream. Love old brass stuff.

Our fair city...

Who doesn't like Waffle House? There's one every two blocks in the Southeast. Here is a picture of the first Waffle House ever opened on Labor Day of 1955 in Decatur (metro Atlanta neighborhood). It was refurbished to it's original state in 2008 and became the Waffle House museum. By the way, check the bottom of the sign and see if you can pick up on the other popular Georgia-based restaurant's name.



Man times have changed. Here's a picture of Peachtree Street (One of the main drags that runs from one side of downtown Atlanta all the north through Buckhead and out of the city) in 1907:
